Our Intent

When teaching mathematics at Hangleton Primary School, we intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and sets them up with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to become successful in their future adventures. We want all children to deepen their number sense, by being curious about mathematics and make connections with the world around them.

We believe all children can achieve in mathematics, and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. We use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and provide challenge through rich and sophisticated problems.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • become fluent in the essentials of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately to be successful in mathematics.
  • be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • reason mathematically by working systematically and being able to develop and present a justification, argument or proof, using mathematical language.

Recommended Maths Websites

The internet is a rich resource of games, puzzles and activities to support and consolidate learning at home. This is especially true with Mathematics! At school, we strive to incorporate within the teaching and learning of maths a variety of ICT based interactive resources that help to bring maths alive. Many of these applications also serve to place the learning in a meaningful context that the children can relate to. As such, they are an invaluable resource that can be dipped into for free at home!

With this in mind, we have spent some time browsing the many educational sites on offer and have listed below a handful of the more effective ones:

Ideas for Learning Times Tables

Times tables are needed for many areas of Maths.

For example:

  • Quick mental calculations
  • Written methods of multiplication and division
  • Fractions
  • Calculating area and perimeter

From the end of Year 2, we deliver 2–4 sessions on times tables each week. They focus on one table per week until Year 4 then we start to mix them up.

It’s important for children to know all the multiplication facts up to 12 x 12 and then transfer this knowledge to division facts. This will allow your child to have an instant recall of the facts and free up their memory for more challenging maths tasks.

There are lots of fun ways that you can support your child and practise times tables at home.

  • Chanting
  • Create a game
  • Tricks
  • Create a dance

If your child struggles to learn the facts by rote, or gets stuck on one or two, you can help them to quickly derive facts using what they already know.

For example, 12x6.
Most children know that 11 x 6 = 66 so they can add on another 6.

You can also find patterns that help you quickly recall facts – the 9 times table is full of them.

Doubling and halving can be a quick way to work out facts. For example, if you know 2 x 6 = 12 then 4 x 6 and 8 x 6 can be calculated easily by doubling.
